The catacombs of Paris were a fantastic, death-drenched underground arcade of twists and turns. Over the centuries, these corridors had been home to countless vagrants, criminals and general lowlifes. With centuries of history, hidden secrets and untold mysteries, the tombs had taken on a character of their own. Over six million people called this grotesque, beautiful mausoleum their final resting place. It truly was the Empire of the Dead.
Depending on the way the winds were blowing, the tunnels assumed different characteristics: sweet smells drifting in from the Northern markets; dry, ammonia-tainted air blown back topside from the deepest bowels of the sewers. When the wind was just right, one could discover an infinite number of unexpected aromas.
Since the construction of the Straights, more and more sections of the sewer system below ground had become unofficial extensions of, and thus colloquially named, ‘The Catacombs.’ In March of 2037, Remy La Bouffe and his new business partner, the mysterious Mr Cipher, were using such extensions of ‘The Catacombs’ beneath Paris as a base of operations.
